Unit 11 - Assignment 4

Job roles in Print Based media relating to my future job path:

When I'm older I want to work in the film industry. As a result I have looked at a number of job roles that give me an oppertunity to work within the film industry as well as given me the chance to use my knowledge into use within the print based media industries, as it  will allow me to write effective pieces to the highest professional standard.

Film Reporter

The film reporter could be invited to the set of a film like Star Wars 9 or write about news they may have heard regarding upcoming films. We might see articles within movie magazines like Empire or Total Film. By writing the articles about rumours regarding upcoming  films they will be able to attract an audience by creating excitement and they will be able to use this by providing this information in future issues. Reporters can be lucky enough  to get interviews with actors and stars asking them personal questions that are usually seen on Youtube.

Film critic

Film critics working for newspapers or magazines will review films whether they are new or old famous examples include Roger Ebert or The Guardian. Usually they tend to give a summary or  a brief description of the overall story which can contain spoilers. A review from a known critic like Roger Ebert can influence whether people go and see a film like Star Wars 1. By writing a movie review for the latest Hollywood film  is a form of advertising for the film despite the review being positive or even negative- self advertisement. Fifty shades of grey is a famous example of having bad reviews yet earning a lot in the box office.

Columnist for a film magazine

This informal tone relates to the opinions of the columnist to the personal lives of celebrities like Brad Pitt or Sylvester Stallone. Often these types of columnists might spread rumours or news about these people like the recent split with Brad Pitt turning to drugs as a consequence of divorcing Angelina Jolie. Hearing about celebrities like this will attract readers as they will be very keen to enjoy finding out 'private' information about their favourite stars through these columns which the Daily Mail online does.

Film Article Writer

Film article writers will talk about latest films during the upcoming months. They will write about films that are popular with audiences and they will get the  oppertunity to interview actors/actresses of upcoming film at a press junket in order to advertise the show. Journalists will write about films by including a short synopsis and a quick 60 minute interview with stars  like the Metro does daily.

Identification of skills gaps and skills development plan

Skill gap

Previous experience in the print based industry- I don't have any current exp in this sector but I'm use to writing reports and essays for school work during creative subjects. I will able to learn about this course online as there are a lot of courses on Youtube showing an inside into the print based media. However I feel like I can connect with people and I can get along with them socially by understand what type of person they are and their ambitions making it easier if I would ask them questions about their job- but I would need training to absorb information in a professional manner by practicing.

I'm very informed in using current technology like Word and Photoshop, I'm able to use iPads, computers and all necessary tecnolhy that is current in todays society, I would need to learn more about using the printing equipments as I haven't had any experience.

For part of my coursework I'm able to look into and research tasks in depth for past projects, it's much more easier to look up information online rather than going to a library and picking out a book, therefore I will  be able to complete the tasks a lot quicker.

I have a basic understanding in using words to form an idea or even an argument,  I would need to look at it at a deeper level to create a stronger more rash viewpoint by justify and analysing my viewpoints in a much deeper level. There is a need to improve as I do slightly suffer with Dyslexia which does at times make it hard to jot my ideas but can be improved over time.

Skill development plan

Previous experience in the print based industry- It will be extremely useful to learn from key workers and using my initiative to read and absorb as much knowledge of the print based industry as I know I'm very capable of doing this.

I'm very informed in using current technology like Word and Photoshop- I can improve this by watching video tutorials on how to develop my skills further to help me in the print based media industry.

For part of my coursework I'm able to look into and research tasks in depth for past projects,- I will have to make sure the information is trustworthy, it's important and there isn't any incorrect made up information. I will have to keep re-reading my information to make sure all the gramma is correct.

I have a basic understanding in using words to form an idea or even an argument,- Looking at structures of an argument will be useful  to improve my technique, I will able to practice looking at different sides of an argument and I will be able to come to a firm conclusion.

I will complete each task during the 18th May - 24th May - during each morning and afternoon to the best of my ability.

Find examples of digipaks and magazine albums

Here is an example of a digipak. This is for Michael Jackson’s – This is it. The digipak appears like a book which has many pages with images of his tour, a track list and a credit list with the names of producers, composes etc. The CDs are hidden within the miniature book and are inside a paper wallet. The first CD is of his songs and the second is demos of other songs by the artist. Throughout the CD the same style imagery and font styles are used to create a brand identity for the artist, this includes most images of him on stage performing.
The layout of  the artists name and the album name immediately below was aesthetically clear and precise. Secondly the use of a quote from a reputable source on the album was something that would give a greater promotion.

Unit 54 Digital Graphics for print

  Understand graphic formats and application

Definitions:

Raster -rectangular pattern of parallel scanning lines followed by the electron beam on a television screen or computer monitor. A raster image is made of up pixels, each a different colour, arranged to display an image. bitmap, a single-bit raster, corresponds bit-for-bit with an image displayed on a screen, generally in the same format used for storage in the display's video memory, or maybe as a device-independent bitmap. A raster is technically characterized by the width and height of the image in pixels and by the number of bits per pixel (or colour depth, which determines the number of colors it can represent).[

Vector - A vector image is made up of paths, each with a mathematical formula (vector) that tells the path how it is shaped and what colour it is bordered with or filled by.One of the first uses of vector graphic displays was the US SAGE air defense system. Vector graphics systems were only retired from U.S. en route air traffic control in 1999, and are likely still in use in military and specialised systems. Vector graphics were also used on the TX-2 at the MIT Lincoln Laboratory by computer graphics pioneer Ivan Sutherland to run his program Sketchpad in 1963.

Metafiles  - A piece of graphical information stored in a format that can be exchanged between different systems or software.Microsoft uses this term for its Windows Metafile (WMF) format. A WMF file contains a sequence of graphical-device-interface (GDI) function calls ("commands" to the Windows operating system ) that results in the presentation of a graphic image. Some of the function calls are equivalent to vector graphics statements and others identify stored bitmap or literal specifications of which bits to illuminate ( raster graphics images).

File extensions  file extension or file name extension is the ending of a file that helps identify the type of file in operating systems such as Microsoft Windows. ... For example, the file name "myfile.txt" has an extension of ".txt", which is a file name extension associated with text filesComputer files have specific characteristics which depend on the software that created them. If you try to open a file using the wrong program, it will fail to open or sometimes even crash the program. The last part of the file name is used to indicate the type of file so the computer can open the correct program when you want to use the file.
In the early days of the personal computer, file names consisted of up to seven characters followed by a file extension consisting of a full stop and three characters. But since 1995, file names can be much longer and the main part of the name can include full stops. So now the last full stop in the name is considered to mark the start of the file extension.

Unit 29- Music Videos- Assignment 3

This is the link to our music video- The Lazy Song by Bruno Mars:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yW2e3E2Jb6s&feature=youtu.be

This is the link to the behind the scenes and blooper reel as evidence for our music video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MnmOlspA4kM&feature=youtu.be

During our filming and editing Daniel and I had our own roles to ensure the task would be completed on a high standard. During filming, I was the director and Daniel was the actor. With each shot and sequence we both talked about each scene in depth about the stage directions and meaning to each shot. From the bts video, I instructed Dan to try and bring out a creative character as much as possible, he was able to create the character I wanted.

Within the behind the scenes video 'bloopers' were also included showing that not everything was perfect on the first try and that a lot of time and effort was spent in order to ensure we attained the correct shots that we needed. As you know, it took trial and error in order to ensure that we could get the footage that was needed for the music video. As the director I ensured that Dan was listening to me where if there was anything unclear or if I felt there was anything that needed further discussing we would consult one another throughout the video (as can be seen at certain points throughout the behind the scenes video.

In post-production Daniel undertook the role of the main editor but I also worked together to decide what was best for video and what could be done to further enhance the overall quality and professional standard of the music video. I spoke to Daniel about including visual graphics to help bring the music video to life. In order to ensure the video was industry standard we made sure the lip-synchronisation was next to perfect and made sure that the narrative of the story made sense.

Audience Feedback

After showing the video to an audience we got:

Animation and graphics to enhance exp
Use of tech ability
Lip synching on point
Clear narrative
Well done, good attempt
Used a number of aspects.

Music Track Analysis

Choice of music track including analysis of track:

Bruno Mars- The Lazy Song

We have chosen to do The Lazy Song by Bruno Mars, as it is reflected in the title, the whole verse of the song describes the feeling and condition of laziness. The song is opened with the very straightforward sentence "Today I don't feel like doing anything." Of course, if you are lazy, you must not want to do anything. You only want to "lay in your bed." Even to pick up the telephone, it's something that will bother you so much. In this video we get to see Bruno Mars singing with background dancers dressed as monkeys.

One thing that Bruno Mars finds exciting is to 'do some P90X, meet a really nice girl, and have some really nice sex.' However, in that very occasion it is likely that you still gain your consciousness. You remember that this whole laziness is not in right track with your Dad's wish for you to get your college degree. But you know, it's just for a while. Being dilligent and studying hard can be done tomorrow, not today. And today you still want to spend your time doing anything. And that's it, today you "don't feel like doing anything, nothing at all."

Some of the lyrics are abbreviated or slang, such as 'Wanna' and 'Cause'. This could be connected to the lazy attitude in which this song wants to represent, emphasising the fact. There is a crude teenage representation of 'Let everything hang loose', as all of the characters including Bruno Mars pull down there jeans and being to trust. This may shock the view but from a humorous perspective.

Bruno Mars said during an interview "we were trying to make a song that was better than the Beatles. We were trying to be magical and historic. After five hours, it all turned to rubbish. The frustration got to me and I said, 'Today I don't feel like doing anything at all.' That opened up everyone's eyes. When you're overshooting, you get the worst work. When you're relaxed, you have your best. I'm a light kind of guy."

Performer's Style and image :

Bruno Mars is a stylish singer whose look is always current. In his choice of dressing he tries to keep to a rock’n’roll style, which makes him so popular among girls. A wide range of admirers want to follow him and his style in clothes. Bruno Mars likes accessories because with the help of them he brings out his individuality. He constantly wears a wide range of various bracelets and chains. Speaking about his style it's thought to be mentioned that it is impossible to see him without head-dress, like a Fedora. This type of head-dress adds to his image with a personal charm looks. He loves flannel shirts, he represents that classic rock band tee. He wears skinny jeans and loves his vans shoes.

The Video Style and Creative concept:

This song is from the pop genre and has received over 178 million views on YouTube. The song 'Lazy song' by Bruno mars is a catchy and upbeat tune, this video is mainly concept/narrative based with an element of performance.

The video stars Bruno himself, and 5 men dressed as monkeys. It is a viral style video that uses a camera in a fixed position and shows a full length shot. The artists mimes the lyrics and him and the monkeys move and dance in sync. The movement is very upbeat and suits the mood of the song. The movements and actions closely match the lyrics of the song. For example the lyric ' Don't feel like picking up the phone' is matched with the action of all 6 actor making the phone action with their hands. This is very much the same with the relationship between the music and and the visuals. For example during the chorus they all nod to the beat of the song and at the end of each chorus there is a whistling tune. All the actors move their heads with this.

I think it is a unique music video and has many qualities that I have been inspired to think about when planning my music video. I like how simple it is. Dressing 5 actors up as monkeys are asking them to perform a song in a performance space is very effective in this video, and is very simple as it suits the meaning and mood behind the song. For our creative concept we are thinking of keeping in the humour and keeping it simple, will be the best bet. We are thinking of trying to be unique either by slightly referring to the music video or mocking current political affairs.

Research - As we are thinking of keeping the music video simple, we are going to film inside Daniels House- his bedroom, dining room etc...

Here below are examples of the pre production that Daniel and I did, we did this in order to understand how to make a music video it's imperative we plan our music video.

The Shot List is used to see what lyrics match the screen.

The location permission form is used in order to film on site, it's evidence for permission to film.

The location recce is used to see whether or not the location is suitable for filming, in this case we can see there are both positive and negatives.

The Location Request Letter, is evidence for using the location on the dates selected .

The Production schedule is used when filming to see what needs to be filmed where and when and who needs to be involved, the schedule helps the crew to be organised.

Risk Assessment for ‘The Lazy Song’ Music video

What is the risk
Who/what is at risk?
How high is the risk
Method of avoiding/reducing risk
Dropping /breaking the camera that is being used during the photo-shoot
Camera
Medium
Make sure that the camera is tightened to the tripod if the clip I am shooting involves using one. If not handle the camera with care and ensure that I am not going anywhere that the camera is at risk of breaking. We will also ensure that we are the only people using the camera to avoid the chances of other people possibly causing damage to it if for example they do not know what they are doing.
Dropping/breaking a tripod
Tripod
Medium
Handle the tripod with care; make sure that I know how to adjust the different parts to the tripod before use to ensure that I do not do it wrong. If there is a problem with the tripod I will have to make sure that I have access to another one if needed. We will also ensure that we are the only people using the tripod so that other people’s interference do not cause any unintended damage.
Myself or others tripping over the tripod
Crew members and actors
Medium
Must ensure that we know where the tripod is and watch our footing when around the tripod. Since this is just two of us who will be behind the camera anyway there shouldn’t be others around the tripod so therefore we will ask that others do not stand or go near the tripod during use. We will also make it apparent to other people that we are using the area in particular and make our presence known.
Falling whilst carrying camera equipment
Crew members and actors
Medium
I will ensure that whilst I am carrying the camera equipment that I am careful and watch my footing so that I am certain I do not hurt myself or damage any of the equipment.
Low Camera battery
Camera operator
Low
Before I begin shooting and when I shoot I will make sure that the camera is fully charged or that I have access to a spare battery as well as a charger so that way I am sure that the camera will always be able to be used.
Full memory space in the camera
Camera operator
Low
I will ensure that the memory card I am using has enough space that I need and that I have access to a spare if needed. I will make sure there is empty space on the memory card I am using so that I can film as much footage as possible and so that there is space for what I need. Should I need any extra memory space I will wipe the memory card, ensuring that I back up the footage first beforehand as we do not want any of it to be lost.
Bumping into people with the camera equipment at busy times
Public

Crew Members
Low to medium
I will have to respect the fact that I am getting into other peoples space and although I have a job to do, I should let the areas clear before I start moving from one place to another in order to ensure that I do not get in other peoples way. I will use my time wisely and plan out when I am going to film in order to ensure there isn’t huge public interference. I also need to ensure that I am following the permissions of the area that I am filming in. This should mean beforehand we are essentially able to know where and what we can film.
Falling over in the street/issues in the street-
Crew members

Actors
Medium to high
We will make sure the actor(s) take their time especially in dangerous areas near the road. We will also ensure that when we are filming next to or in a road that it is not during a busy time to keep the actors level or risk incredibly low. We need to ensure that we are keeping an eye out at all times as a means of keeping the actor(s) and ourselves safe and it is important not to put people at risk.
Lost camera equipment
Crew
Low
We will ensure that at all times we know exactly who is using what equipment and when and that afterwards all is returned. To ensure we do not lose the equipment it is imperative that we keep them all securely restrained within any carrying cases or sealed in protective equipment.

The Risk assessment is used to see how we can overcome any problems that we might face when filming.

The Storyboard is used to see what shots needs to be filmed, it's very similar to the shot list.

The Team Roles and Responsibilities are used to see what each person's job is whilst working on the music video.
The Selection of technical and performance crew is used to see what equipment we will need to film and edit our music video.

The Shot List shows, what Daniel did for each shot that will be filmed will match the storyboard.
